Social justice…according to urbandictionary.com social justice has a common meaning of equality. Throughout the world there are many interpretations of the meaning to social justice. My own personal definition of social justice is similar to the definition urban dictionary has. Social justice to me is people being equal regardless of race gender or economic status. In the 21st century I believe social justice would look like peace on Earth. The idea Daniel Goleman had about teenagers being taught emotions in schools would impact the way people act towards each other. If teenagers who are essentially the next to being leaders and role models of the world were taught how to handle their emotions then treating people equally would be no problem at all.
The problem is that people treating each other fairly is only something that would happen in a society that was something like a utopia. To have a perfect world is far from being possible. Even though that may seem pessimistic it is the reality. The only way that this world would have social justice all over would be if people felt empathy for one another. Social justice the way I see it is now being fought for by people actually letting their voices be heard.
In 2008 nearly 9 million children died before their 5th birthday and 21 million children depend on free or reduced price school lunches. Now, that fact right there should show there is something wrong with the way the world is. The thought of people going hungry and starving to death makes me disappointed. Why is it that they do not get the chance to live their life? What makes them so different from you and me...? Children going hungry is a problem throughout the world. According to Mark Salling, more than 1 in 5 children in this country do not have enough food to live active healthy lives. He also says that hunger undermines the success of students in school. Hunger does not only effect how a child lives but also effects how a child does in school. Not only does that make them unhealthy but also makes them disadvantaged to having a good education when all they can think about is how empty their stomach is. In this country even children are going hungry. Instead of helping these children out money is spent in selfish ways.
There are organizations that help some children in the world get food. My thing is, why should these children need help if they are humans to. There are people in this world that can have full course meals every day. According to the World Food Programme there are four main statistics on hunger, one is hunger is the world’s number one health risk that kills more people than AIDs, malaria and tuberculosis combined, another is one in seven people in the world will go to bed hungry tonight, third is one out of four children in developing countries are underweight, and lastly there are more hungry people in the world then the combined populations of the U.S, Canada, and the European Union. To think of so many people not having food is unfair. Being born into a life like the one that many children are born into is rough because they do not have the same chances as many other people.
I know that I myself am guilty of throwing away perfectly good food to the garbage. That is a problem in our society. We do not think of one another but rather think of only ourselves. Social justice to me is people being equal regardless of race gender or economic status. The children that are going hungry do not have any social justice whats so ever. Their economic status makes them unable to have the necessities to survive. In my opinion, that’s horrible to know that our world has come to being so much about money that our life depends on it. The children who do not have the advantage of having money to buy everything I have makes me appreciate what I usually take for granted. I know many people are the same way, but if they only knew what these children felt then everything people have would be cherished.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights in my opinion is an accurate representation to how fair people should be treated. Article 25 of this declaration states that, “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family including food, clothing, housing and medical care…” This article and the document itself shows that there are some people who have the same thoughts I do about how people should be treated which is how more people should be like. A child not being able to have food which is adequate for their health and well-being clearly is taking away a human right that a child as a human should have.
In conclusion, I know the world has many problems wrong with it but the children are the future to our world and without them being educated and healthy then who will make the effort to change our world to a utopia. Child hunger is a problem throughout the whole world that goes against my definition of what social justice should be. The world needs change. We want a utopia. The children are the future they are humans to.
